Full name: Minglu Li

Current title & company: Senior Performance Attribution Analyst, Geode Capital Management

Brief description of who you are professionally with concise accomplishments:

I am a perfectionist who deals with numbers to the one-hundredth of one percent (basis point). I primarily work on attribution for equity index funds at Geode, which is over 90% of our total assets (over half a trillion!). I use numbers to tell stories on how our portfolios outperform the benchmarks and build a better understanding for our clients on investment strategies. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Purdue University, a Master’s degree in Finance from Bentley and am working towards getting my CFA next year.

Why did you join TWT and what are you hoping to achieve as a member of the organization?

I have very distinct professional traits that allow me to do what I am doing today in the investment industry. I ask a lot of questions at work and some of them are truly stupid questions but you learn from it. I feel that women do not ask enough what they deserve and I want to share what has benefited me to grow as a strong young professional. I was inspired by my prior manager Emily Dahlen, who is also a member at TWT (also member of the year in 2019). As I stepped into more years of my professional life, I strongly felt that the need to be continuously inspired by other female professions. As Confucius says, “by three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest”. TWT is a great place to learn all three things mentioned.

What is one of your most proud professional moments and what are you most looking forward to professionally in the next five years?

I am very proud of myself growing from working alone to a valuable team player. I am very proud of the team I work within and two very intelligent bosses I work with. Being a team player allowed me to accomplish more at work and learn more from people I work with on a daily basis. I started working since 2016 and have been enjoying my work life more and more each day by effective communication. In the next five years, I hope I can grow into a better team player and a great leader that mentors and cares about people who work beside me.

What do you do in your “free” time?

I play guitar and try to learn new songs every month as a way to relax and enjoy music. I like to read a book while listening to my collection of vinyl records, mostly classical music. I also have a French stomach as I like to eat everything rare and fresh.

What are your 3 core values?

  • Kindness: I find caring for other people heeling all the time. Be kind and considerable of other people made me realize how people’s happiness and sorrow are incomparable and it is all relative.
  • Inner balance: Inner balance as in finding who you truly are and embrace your strengths and weaknesses
  • Loyalty: Loyalty can mean different things. Be loyal to someone you care about, or loyal to what you believe and love. We should be loyal to what we care about.

Fun Fact/What makes YOU, you?

I am my own reflection. I think about my past, consider my way at present and work my way to my future.
