Brief description of who you are professionally w/ concise accomplishments –My career began as a pre-school teacher right after graduating from Colorado State University with a BS in Child Development. I decided to leave teaching, and I began working in various administrative roles. I enjoyed administration so much that I decided to go back to school to get a MS in Human Services from Capella University. I have been working in administration for 5 years now.
I worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for 3.5 years. In that time, I worked in both Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) and Urology. I supported surgeons in both departments, including the Chief of Urology. I transitioned from the healthcare industry and moved on to working at an asset management firm. I have been working at Geode since September of 2019, supporting Geode’s President.
Why did you join TWT and what are you hoping to achieve as a member of the organization? – Geode is a sponsor of TWT. With this connection, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a few in person events towards the end of 2019. I left each event feeling a mixture of emotions. Each event left me feeling inspired and wanting to continue striving towards making progress/improvements in both my professional and personal life. However, I was also quite intimidated by some of the women whom I met. Everyone seemed so put together, almost like they have the exact answers to life’s biggest questions (especially when it comes to balancing personal and professional lives, a.k.a. “How to have it all”). But along with this image of perfection, I could also tell that everyone is extremely genuine. Genuinely smart, kind, and wanting to make a positive impact on their communities in any way they can. I knew that I wanted to become a part of this group for that reason, and to grow professionally while learning from these incredible women and the resources that TWT has to offer.
What is one of your most proud professional moments and what are you most looking forward to professionally in the next five years? As far as work, my proudest moment was probably landing my current job. It has taken me quite a lot of time and self-reflection to get to this phase in my career. I have made many adjustments over the past five years or so especially with the career change from pre-school teaching . In my current role, I am able to assist with certain HR related tasks and projects. I have really enjoyed this and am looking to step into HR in my next role and make that my long-term career path. I have recently been accepted into a Doctorate of Business Administration program for Human Resource Management. I start in January and am very excited to see what opportunities this degree might lead me to.
What do you do in your “free” time? Hobbies, Interests…. – I am truthfully quite basic. My free time is normally spent with friends and family. Some activities I enjoy in normal times are going out for dinner and drinks, going to movies, travelling, and going to the beach. Although I don’t do it as much as I’d like to these days, I love volunteering. When I was 19, I spent three months in Australia working as a teacher’s assistant for refugee kids. Despite being quite brief, that entire experience is definitely one of the biggest highlights of my life.
3 Core Values (i.e. Loyalty, hard work, independence) – Kindness, Integrity, and Perseverance. The world would be quite a dark place without people who display integrity and are kind. I think perseverance teaches you a lot about patience and what exactly you are capable of (hint: it’s probably a lot more than you think).
Fun Fact/What makes YOU, you? – Helping others is my biggest passion. This seems quite broad, and I suppose that this is also why it has taken me so long to find the correct career path for myself, but I think we all need to find a way to make a positive impact on the world. It doesn’t have to be grand, but especially in today’s climate people need to look out for and support one another with whatever means/capacity they have to do so.
